Secret beaches in Chennai - Akkarai Beach / Kunal Garden Street Beach

I've always had this severe crush on lonely beaches. Apart from Manori in Mumbai about which I had already posted, here is the Sholinganallur beach called Kunal Garden Street Beach or Akkarai Beach, down south, near Chennai. Unlike Marina or Mahabs (Mahabalipuram, as it is nick named by locals), this beach is one of the lonely beaches near Chennai. With just one mobile icecream parlour, this is a perfect excuse for a solitude evening. And to watch the sunset is the absolute way to unwind a stressful day. It is definitely one of the best beaches in Chennai, actually its one of the secret, secluded, romantic beaches in Chennai.

Update Feb 2010: This beach has now been made famous by the oh-So-Romantic Tamil Movie Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaya, starring Simbu & Trisha. This was the shooting location of the movie Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaya break-up scene - when Jessie (played by Trisha) turns around and goes away after breaking up with Karthik (played by Simbu)!

From 3:09 in this video clip! The street where they are talking opposite to the Mermaid Swimming Pool is the street to take to reach the beach!

From Chennai city: 
Guindy -> Madhya Kailash -> Tidel Park -> Thiruvanmiyur -> ECR -.....> Sozhinganallur road
The second turn towards the beach before reaching Sozhinganallur Main road

From Tambaram:
East Tambaram -> Medavakkam -> Sozhinganallur Jn -> ECR-........>Thiruvanmiyur

    This is a secluded secret beach of Chennai, Even many Chennaities are not aware of this one.
